What we know about Saturday’s SF power outage

  • December 21, 2025

One-third of San Francisco residents are without power as of 3:20 p.m. Saturday. The outages, which have been intermittent since last night, have shut down stoplights and caused issues with local public transit.

125,016, or 30.2%, of Pacific Gas and Electric customers are without power (opens in new tab), according to the utility. Neighborhoods affected include the Sunset and Richmond Districts, along with Haight-Ashbury, Pacific Heights, and the Presidio.

SFMTA has shut down some of its Metro stops throughout the day as a result of the outages. The Muni underground is currently bypassing the Powell, Civic Center, and Van Ness stations due to power outages, according to a (opens in new tab)statement (opens in new tab) from the agency. BART is (opens in new tab)also bypassing (opens in new tab) Powell and Civic Center stations.

Although PG&E haven’t confirmed a cause for the outages, the San Francisco Fire Department has confirmed that there is an ongoing fire at a PG&E substation at 8th and Mission Streets. SFFD received a call about the fire at 2:16 p.m. on Saturday, according to SFFD Lieutenant Mariano Elias. The fire is now 80% contained, and there are no injuries or structural damage.

“I’m sure [the fire] has a contributing factor as to why the power is out in the city,” Elias said.

Other Bay Area cities such as Oakland, Richmond, and South San Francisco, have not experienced widespread outages.
