FRESNO – The Fresno airport will be reaching new altitudes thanks to its largest modernization project to date.

On Dec. 17, the Fresno Yosemite International Airport (Airport code: FAT) celebrated the completion and opening of the expanded terminal, marking a major advancement in modernizing the airport. The project was made possible thanks to federal funding secured by Congressman Jim Costa, totalling more than $85 million from 12 different grants.

“This achievement reflects the dedication, skill and hard work of airport staff, construction teams and local partners who brought this project to life over several years,” Costa said in a statement. “Thanks to strong federal support we secured through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and additional Community Project Funding, this expansion is now a reality and will strengthen the local economy, support businesses and create new opportunities for residents throughout the San Joaquin Valley.”

In the statement, Costa also acknowledged the work of the late Henry Thompson, former director of aviation at FAT, whose leadership and collaboration were instrumental in advancing the project.

The terminal project is part of the airport’s FATforward Plan, a multi-year expansion program that began in 2020 with the groundbreaking of the four-level parking garage. The new terminal will help the airport meet rising consumer demand, improve regional connectivity and continue to serve as a hub for residents and visitors of the valley.

According to the statement from Costa’s office, the expansion is expected to generate an $85 million dollar economic impact for the Valley, and will feature:

A new terminal concourse with more domestic and international passenger gates and larger boarding areas;
Two additional aircraft parking positions;
A new Federal Inspection Station (FIS) for international arrivals;
A friends and family plaza area to welcome international travelers;
An expanded Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint screening area;
New concession areas for retail and dining; and
A new public art program in partnership with the Fresno Arts Council.

The completion of this expansion marks the culmination of more than four years of planning, coordination and construction to bring this project to life. According to the FYI website, this project has added an additional 98,000 square feet to the airport’s footprint.

“Today is an unforgettable day in the city of Fresno as we unveiled the largest terminal expansion in the airport’s history,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer in a statement. “This new expansion strengthens our region’s future by positioning the airport as (a) more competitive and attractive facility for growing air service and creating opportunities for a thriving economy.”
