The Tar Heels are 0-3 against Power 4 competition this season and come off a 38-10 blowout loss at home to Clemson on Oct. 4 in their ACC opener. North Carolina is averaging just 264.8 yards a game on offense. If quarterback Gio Lopez can’t go on Friday, Max Johnson will get the start. In three games, he has thrown for 383 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Demon June leads the run game with 266 yards and a score, while Jordan Shipp is the top target in the passing game with 18 receptions, 234 yards, and two TDs. Andrew Simpson and Javarius Green lead the defense with two sacks apiece.
California also comes off a blowout loss at home, falling to Duke 45-21 on Oct. 4 to fall to 1-1 in the ACC. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has completed 62.2% of his throws for 1,479 yards and nine touchdowns, but also has seven interceptions. Trond Grizzell comes in with 24 catches for 400 yards and a score, while Kendrick Raphael has 414 rushing yards with four TDs. Hezekiah Masses already has four interceptions and six pass breakups, and TJ Bush Jr. leads the team with three sacks.
The Golden Bears and North Carolina play for the first time since Cal joined the ACC in 2024, with the Bears winning both previous meetings in 2017 and 2018.
