FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Families are making that last-minute trip to the grocery store, getting ready to whip up those appetizing Christmas dinners.

As you prep your ingredients and get to work in the kitchen, doctors have this reminder.

“There are lots of ways that you can make those holiday favorites really healthy,” said Dr. Owen Goldsworthy, a Family Physician at Kaiser Permanente in Fresno.

The season is filled with our favorite foods, from the savory holiday ham to the classic mac and cheese, to even delightful desserts.

While it’s a time for us to indulge, Dr. Goldsworthy explains that finding substitutes for our meals is one way to keep things fun and healthy.

“Maybe instead of ranch as the dipping side, it could be some Greek yogurt,” said Dr. Goldsworthy. “There are lots of ways we can change the holiday favorites without changing the taste significantly.”

Doctors say it’s okay to spoil ourselves with a sweet treat, just as long as it’s in moderation.

Health experts recommend cutting down on portions can help. If you have a meal routine in place, it’s okay to stick to it.

“If we’re used to eating at a set time, I think we can continue with that,” said Dr. Gino Urbano, a Pediatric Resident with Valley Children’s Hospital. “If the kids are used to having snacks at a certain time, I think it’s a perfect opportunity to give them a healthy snack. “

Dr. Urbano tells Action News that it’s important to teach kids how to “eat the rainbow.”

“When I think of the holidays, there are two colors that stick out, but particularly green,” said Dr. Ubrano. “When we prepare our plates for the kids, let’s make sure they have green on them. Make sure they have colors, we can see green, yellow, and red.”

After enjoying a full holiday meal with family and friends, doctors suggest getting active.

“Maybe do a dance party,” said Dr. Goldsworthy. “Maybe go walk the neighborhood to see the holiday decorations, less sitting around.”

Experts say that by keeping these tips in mind, it can lead you to having a happier and healthier holiday.
