A 16-year-old passengers was killed after suffering serious injuries from a car crash in Long Beach earlier this week, police said Thursday.

The collision happened at around 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 23 in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and Wardlow Road, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

When officers responded to the scene, they saw the 16-year-old girl as well as a 17-year-old male driver of a 2007 Saturn Aura. They were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver of another car, a 2021 Jeep Wrangler, was uninjured and cooperated with investigators at the scene, police added.

According to the preliminary findings, the two cars were traveling southbound on Long Beach Boulevard when the Saturn was trying to change the lane and crashed into the Jeep.

“Speed and distracted driving may have been contributing factors to this collision,” the Long Beach Police Department said.

Investigators said they were notified the 16-year-old female passenger died on Christmas Eve.

Police are not releasing the identity of the teenager due to her age.
