Three people were seriously hurt in a Christmas Day traffic crash in Commerce Township, according to Oakland County Sheriff’s authorities.

The crash happened at 2 p.m. Thursday on East Maple Road at M-5 when a 32-year-old Walled Lake Township man, driving a 2012 Ford Fusion, failed to stop at a red light on eastbound East Maple Road. The Fusion hit a 2025 Lincoln Navigator with an 89-year-old Clarkston man at the wheel who had been headed south on M-5. A 69-year-old woman was a passenger in the Lincoln.

The Walled Lake man was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken by ambulance to Ascension Providence Hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

The Clarkston man, whose seatbelt was improperly buckled, was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital with serious injuries. He was treated and released. The woman in his car had been using her seatbelt properly and remains in Henry Ford Hospital for treatment of possibly serious injuries;

The sheriff’s statement indicated there’s no sign of drug or alcohol use as a factor in the crash.

Deputies in the sheriff’s crash-reconstruction unit used a drone to help deputies from the Commerce Township substation investigate the crash.
