The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver of a Ford sedan lost control after hitting standing water on the roadway, causing the vehicle to veer off and collide with a tree in an orchard.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP is investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Authorities urge drivers to slow down in wet conditions, watch for standing water, and always wear seat belts.
