Interstate 5 near Castaic in Los Angeles County is shut down after reports of an explosion due to a gas leak, according to several reports.

Traffic in both directions was halted after initial reports of a rupture in a main gas line near the intersection of Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place about 4:20 p.m. Saturday.

It was later reported that there had been an explosion.

Shortly after that, Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 149, a mile down the road, reported smelling gas. Kight said he could smell the gas from “20 minutes out.”

The California Highway Patrol indefinitely closed all lanes of I-5 at 5:12 p.m. On the social platform X, the CHP said all northbound traffic would be diverted to State Route 126, and all southbound traffic to State Route 138.

Traffic along I-5 has remained at a near standstill for more than 90 minutes.

No evacuations have been ordered but residents were asked to shelter in place.

The shelter-in-place order, issued at 5:40 p.m., spans much of Castaic and advises residents to close all doors, windows and vents, and shut off HVAC systems.

By 6 p.m., the gas company had shut off both sides of the broken gas line, but firefighters and a hazmat task force continued to respond a residual leak.

The cause of the leak is unknown, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies told CBS Los Angeles that it was possibly caused by a mudslide.

The closure comes as holiday travelers, who had to endure another traffic nightmare on I-5 on Christmas Eve, head up and down the state.
