PROVO, Utah (KUTV) — Tyler Robinson, the man accused of shooting and killing Charlie Kirk, is expected back in court on Monday morning.

During the hearing, Judge Tony F. Graf, Jr., is expected to rule on a motion filed by media organizations seeking limited party status in the case and access to audio recordings from a closed hearing in October.

Both Robinson’s defense team and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office have previously asked the Court to ban cameras from the hearings. However, media attorneys representing both local and national news organizations have asked for access.

Media Attorney Jeff Hunt previously said it would be the public that loses if the media is not granted access to future hearings.

“The public will not have an opportunity to actually hear and see what transpires in the courtroom,” said Hunt. He later added, “Once you try to close things down, all it does is attract more attention to the issues and creates more stories about why you’re trying to close things down, and creates a feeling of suspicion and distrust when there is no reason to have that.”

Defense attorneys, however, have argued that allowing the media in the courtroom could create a “content tornado” that could potentially devastate the jury pool in the high-profile case.

Robinson, 22, has been in state custody since his arrest 33 hours after the deadly shooting of Kirk during an open-air event on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, Utah. Shortly after, he was formally charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, tampering with a witness and violent offense committed in the presence of a child.

State prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty against Robinson should he be convicted after trial.
