SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Months after a man was hospitalized after an alleged hate crime attack on Halloween night in Sacramento’s Lavender Heights neighborhood, the Sacramento Police Department on Monday said he died of his injuries.
The man who’s been in custody since his arrest in connection with the attack, 25-year-old Sean Payton, will now face homicide charges following the man’s death, police said. Family of the victim previously identified him as Alvin Prasad.
Lavender Heights is a hub for Sacramento’s LGBTQ+ community, but many have been concerned about safety, with some demanding action from city and police leaders during a forum at the Sacramento LGBT Community Center earlier this month.
Police have previously said they are investigating the Nov. 1 attack at Badlands Sacramento as a hate crime.
Prasad’s daughter, Andrea Prasad, told KCRA 3 that she was out celebrating Halloween with her father and their friend. They had left the nightclub and were heading back to their car when they were approached by a man.
Andrea said the man had insulted her father before punching him, forcing the back of his head to hit the concrete.
Jail records as of Monday show that Payton is ineligible for bail and has a court date on Jan. 30.
