This New Year’s Eve, the high-flying performers at the show “Dear San Francisco” will be joined by a special guest. Britt Lower, best known as Helly R. from “Severance,” is scheduled to appear onstage at Club Fugazi.
“Dear San Francisco” has held a residency at Club Fugazi since 2021, when it replaced long-standing fan favorite “Beach Blanket Babylon.” The show features an athletic cast of circus performers in what’s essentially a San Francisco-themed take on Cirque du Soleil. The 90-minute show runs from Wednesdays through Sundays and features singing, spoken word, acrobatics and interactive elements. It takes a relentlessly optimistic lens on the city, making it hands-down one of most family-friendly activities San Francisco has to offer.
“Severance,” which concluded its second season on Apple TV this spring, became a critical darling for its thought-provoking sci-fi take on work-life balance. It was nominated for three Golden Globes in 2023, and is nominated in four categories in 2026. Lower took home an Emmy as lead actress earlier this year.
Although Lower may seem like an oddball addition to the show – and it’s unclear just what her role will be – she has a long record of participating in offbeat performances. She wrote, directed and starred in a 2020 short film titled “Circus Person.” After the success of Season 1 of “Severance,” she joined Circus Flora in St. Louis, where she sang and played ukulele. After production on Season 2 of “Severance” ended, she joined the Shoestring Circus in Washington. She has also performed with the Flynn Creek Circus, which has toured Northern California, Oregon and Washington.
The special New Year’s Eve show is slated to feature a guest appearance from Jay Alexander, a magician and mentalist who owns the San Francisco Magic Theater at the Marrakech in the Tenderloin, plus Maxwell Jenkins, an actor and acrobat who appeared in Netflix’s “Lost in Space.”
