New Year’s Day is on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, and millions of Americans will be taking the day off.
On New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31st, 2025), most businesses and retailers will remain open, although some may operate on reduced hours.
New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, so most banks and the U.S. Postal Service will close, as well as non-emergency federal executive departments and agencies, and many retailers.
In San Francisco, Muni is free on the evening of New Year’s Eve, and both Muni and BART will run extended hours — more on that here.
