BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department identified the suspect who was shot by an officer Monday morning after fleeing from a vehicle that failed a traffic stop in northwest Bakersfield.

The man was identified as Fabian Lopez, 37, of Bakersfield.

Police said Lopez is in critical condition at the hospital.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers attempted a traffic stop in the area of Mohawk Street and Siena Lane at 2:15 a.m. Monday. The vehicle stopped on Latina Drive and Pisa Way, according to police.

One of the occupants, later identified as Lopez, fled the vehicle eastbound on foot, police said.

An officer with Bakersfield police pursued Lopez, who pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.

The officer then shot the man.
