PHOTOS: A 71-year-old man was pulled from the ice after falling through while riding a snowmobile. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened around 5:45 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Police were called by the man’s wife after two neighbors unsuccessfully went onto the ice to find him. The two neighbors were able to safely return to shore.
Personnel from the Waterford Regional Fire Department personnel found the man and brought him to shore. He was sent to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office says the incident serves as a critical reminder that ice conditions can change rapidly and may be unsafe, even during periods of cold weather. They urge people to use extreme caution around frozen lakes and waterways and to avoid traveling on ice unless conditions are known to be safe.
