BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A welfare check of a man in a peace disturbance and allegedly threatening family members ended with a deadly officer-involved shooting Friday night in south Bakersfield. Police said the man was not compliant and armed with a gun.

The Bakersfield Police Department said on Friday, January 2, 2026, at around 10:11 p.m., officers were called to the 3700 block of El Alisal Street, near Hughes Lane, to check the welfare of a resident who was involved in a peace disturbance and threatening family members.

When officers arrived at around 10:20 p.m., they contacted the man, who was not compliant.

Police said the person was armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting happened.

Medical aid was provided but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the officers were equipped with body-worn cameras which captured the interaction. The footage will be released as the investigation allows.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
