Two Killed, Three Injured in Violent Hit-and-Run Collision

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2026) — Bobbi Smith, 24, and Gilberto Lopez, 21, were killed in a three-vehicle hit-and-run crash in Long Beach that investigators believe may have been caused by speeding and a driver running a red light, authorities said.

The fatal collision was reported at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4th at the intersection of Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue, according to Long Beach Fire Department.

Long Beach police said three vehicles were involved. Preliminary findings indicate the suspect in an orange 2021 BMW 330i was traveling eastbound on East Sixth Street and entered the intersection against a red light. The BMW struck a gray 2022 Nissan Altima traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue, then continued east and collided with a black 2017 Kia Soul heading northbound through the intersection, police said.

Officers arrived to find Smith in the roadway and Lopez on the sidewalk. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims, who were both passengers in the Nissan. Police said both were unconscious when officers arrived.

Life-saving measures were attempted until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the Nissan, along with the driver of the Kia, were transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities said speed and the failure to stop for a red light remain under investigation. The driver of the BMW fled the scene and remains at large.

Detectives are working to locate the motorist who fled.
