While the movies have long boasted a shimmery nickname — “the silver screen” is still used to describe cinema in an especially sparkly sense — there has been plenty of gold to add glitter to storylines, character arcs, and various scenic settings.

Sometimes that gold appears in a sort of mythical or cultural sense, and sometimes as actual, physical gold, but whatever its role, the audience is often captivated.

To honor gold’s hold on our imaginations, and to offer a big-screen journey that complements its current gold-inspired exhibition, the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena will present four films that feature, or have been inspired by, the alluring metal.

All That Glitters kicks off Jan. 9 with “The Gold Rush,” the silent classic starring Charlie Chaplin and his merry and moving misadventures in the Klondike.

The following three Fridays will all be centered around golden works of cinematic art, with “Dawson City: Frozen in Time,” “The Hidden Fortress,” and “Aguirre, the Wrath of God.”

Each film begins at 4:30 p.m. and is included with museum admission.

Your admission also provides entry to the “Gold: Enduring Power, Sacred Craft” exhibition, which examines “… gold’s enduring power to attract, enchant, bewitch, and beguile.”

Some 60 works of golden art are on view, including religious panels, photographs, and a host of precious and powerful pieces.
