FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) — Heroic action by a security officer helped save a man trapped in a fiery crash Friday morning in Fresno on Airway and Dakota Boulevard.

This fiery crash was something he says, unfortunately, has happened pretty often in his line of work.

“The best thing I’d do is get him away from the car, don’t want him to get burnt. I know he was having injuries, but he was coherent, somewhat intoxicated,” said Hernandez.

It happened at 3 am, when Officer Hernandez said the driver had crashed into this tree before going up in flames.

He had heard tires screeching while patrolling nearby apartments.

“The driver was completely, his legs were mangled, and so we had to get him off the ground and away from the car,” said Hernandez.

Two other people, presumed to be teenagers, were also in the car.

One of them told Officer Hernandez that the driver in this white Nissan Altima had been drinking.

“After we sat down and talked for a bit, I said, you know, just be glad and thank god you’re alive. You made it through this, you know, and look into the future. Don’t ever get in a car with anybody who’s been drinking,” said Hernandez.

We reached out to the Fresno Police Department on the status of the driver and if there are any charges expected, but have not heard back.
