BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County District Attorney’s Office said its office reviewed the case involving two teen suspects in the deadly shooting at Foods Co. and determined that additional investigation is required.
22-year-old Joseph Macias of Bakersfield was shot and killed, allegedly by a 17-year-old teen on January 2.

Police said the incident, which occurred at 1801 White Lane, began as a robbery inside the store.
According to police, Macias and another adult were patrons of the business when they observed the theft and attempted to intervene as the suspects, identified as two 17-year-old boys, left to the parking lot. During this encounter, one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds at the people attempting to intervene and Macias was struck. Macias died at the scene.

The teens were arrested the following day.
The DA’s office told Eyewitness News on Tuesday, January 6, that the matter has been referred back to the Bakersfield Police Department.
