Trevor Zegras is closing on a career-best season with the Philadelphia Flyers and gave his former team, the Anaheim Ducks, a first-hand look at the success he’s enjoying Tuesday night.
Zegras scored twice as the Flyers picked up a 5-2 win over the Ducks, taking his hand out of glove in celebration of his first of the night to mimic taking a phone call and quickly putting it down.
The 24-year-old winger said post-game the move was done in reference to the brief phone call he received from Anaheim after being traded for Ryan Poehling and a second-round pick in June.
“That’s about how quick the phone call was before, so I thought it’d be good,” Zegras told NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Selected ninth overall by the Ducks in 2019, Zegras has 17 goals and 41 points in 41 games this season, his best numbers since posting 23 goals and 65 points in 2022-23 with Anaheim.
Zegras was limited to 57 games last season with the Ducks after playing in just 31 in 2023-24. Now fully healthy, Zegras is on pace for his first-ever point-per-game season as he shines with the Flyers.
“It was a tough ending with my time there,” he told reporters. “I had been thinking about this game for a long time, it was one that meant a lot to me. It was definitely cool to get one and then two, so it was special.”
The Bedford, NY. native’s bounce back has come amid a contract season as he heads toward restricted free agency in the last of a three-year, $17.25 million that carries a cap hit of $5.75 million.
