A well-known former reality TV star has announced he is running for mayor of Los Angeles.

According to NBC4 in Los Angeles, Spencer Pratt announced his intentions one year after one of the most destructive wildfires in California history destroyed his home in Pacific Palisades. A website has been launched.

Pratt and his wife, ex-reality star Heidi Montag, rose to prominence in the 2010s when they appeared on the MTV reality show “The Hills.” The couple’s relationship was a major storyline of the popular show.

Pratt, 42, has been a vocal critic of how officials handled the Jan. 7, 2025 wildfire.

Both California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have been frequent targets of Pratt’s social media attacks to his millions of followers on SnapChat, TikTok and Instagram.

He spoke at a “They Let Us Burn” rally by the Palisades Fire Residents Coalition on Wednesday.

“Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I’m done waiting for someone to take real action. That’s why I am running for mayor,” Pratt said, according to NBC4.

“But let me be clear, this just isn’t a campaign — this is a mission, and we are going to expose the system. We are going into every dark corner of L.A. politics and disinfecting the city with our light. LA is going to be camera-ready again.”

Pratt and Montag, who were married in 2008 and have two children, also appeared on “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here” and the British version of “Celebrity Big Brother.”

These days Pratt is an author and entrepreneur, but is best known as a social media star and influencer who had featured content as simple as his family life, mixed martial arts, burritos and feeding hummingbirds.

His content has become increasingly political since the devastating fire uprooted his life.

Montag also has a large social media following and has also been critical of California officials. A singer, she released her second studio album in May 2025.

Pratt shared video of the flames and smoke on the day of the fire before the couple later documented the extent of the destruction. The 23,700-acre fire eventually killed 12 people and destroyed 6,837 structures.

Pratt, Bass and more than a dozen other candidates are in the race for mayor with the primary election scheduled for June 2.

Bass has held the position since 2022.
