San Diego State women’s basketball team converted 13 of 16 field goal attempts, including all seven 3-point shots, in a 37-point first quarter Wednesday night, leading to an 87-69 victory over Grand Canyon at Viejas Arena.
The victory was the 11-3 Aztecs’ fifth straight and boosted them to 5-0 in Mountain West Conference play for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.
“That might be the best quarter of basketball that I’ve ever been associated with,” SDSU coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said. “We shot the ball and defended at a high level for 10 minutes.”
The Aztecs held a 28-point lead after the first quarter as Grand Canyon hit just four of 16 shots. They had runs of 14-0 and 15-0 in the first quarter.
Five Aztecs finished in double figures. Forward Kennedy Lee led the Aztecs in scoring (18 points) and rebounds (nine). Nat Martinez finished with 17 points. Naomi Panganiban had 15 points. Bailey Barnhard had 14 points and seven rebounds. And Nala Williams finished with 12 points, six assists and four steals.
The Aztecs scored 25 points off turnovers.
