BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The man who died after being struck by two vehicles on Highway 99 near Taft Highway on Dec. 29, 2025, has been identified as Jared Jon Harper, 47, of Bakersfield. The Kern County coroner said that Harper was hit around 2:32 a.m.

CHP stated that before their arrival, the driver of the first vehicle involved fled the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that Harper was walking southbound on Highway 99 in the number three lane when he was hit by an unknown vehicle traveling in the same direction. The driver of this vehicle fled, leaving Harper unresponsive in the lane.

CHP said just after 2:30 a.m., a Honda driver traveling southbound on Highway 99 in the number three lane also struck Harper, who was lying unresponsive in the road. CHP reported that the Honda driver was unable to avoid the collision. Harper sustained severe injuries from the initial crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Honda driver stopped and remained at the scene, where emergency personnel contacted him.
