LONG BEACH – Speed and a failure to stop for a red light were being investigated Tuesday as possible factors in a three-vehicle, hit-and-run collision that killed a 24-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man and injured three other people in Long Beach.
The crash was reported at 10:15 p.m. Sunday at Sixth Street and Atlantic Avenue, according to Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Dennis Garrett.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash, Long Beach Police Department Lt. Benjamin Vargas said.
“The preliminary investigation indicates an orange 2021 BMW 330i was … eastbound on East Sixth Street and entered the intersection with Atlantic Avenue through a red light,” according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. “Upon entering the intersection, the orange BMW struck a gray 2022 Nissan Altima that was traveling (south) on Atlantic Avenue through the intersection. The orange BMW continued eastbound and struck a black 2017 Kia Soul that was … northbound on Atlantic Avenue through the intersection.”
Officers arrived to find a woman in the roadway and a man on the sidewalk. They were identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office as Bobbi Smith and Gilberto Lopez, respectively. Both were passengers in the Nissan and were unconscious, police said.
Officers performed life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and pronounced Smith and Lopez dead at the scene.
The driver and front passenger from the Nissan and the driver of the Kia were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life- threatening.
Video from the scene showed the Nissan on its roof, with airbags deployed.
