SAN JOSE, Calif. — From the lovely San Jose airport, where I was the second person through security for a 5:15 a.m. boarding, the Daily is big on Pittsburgh Penguins stories, some young defensemen are filling the NHL trade block, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a fiery netminder who ripped his team Saturday, and Brad Marchand did Brad Marchand things.
If you ever attend an event at the SAP Center in San Jose, my little motel is the spot. Dish Network TV, sitting area, and it’s a half mile from the arena, amongst some local hangouts. Also, it’s authentically a 1950s Saturday night kind of pink.
Now I have that song from Houndstooth stuck in my head.
For some reason, I have that little neighborhood in San Jose memorized. Three straight years staying there, I know exactly where everything is, and it feels a bit like home. It has all of the creature comforts–a little bodega, a pizza shop, and no poop on the sidewalk. What more can you ask?
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s knock this out in proper reading order today. Taken in totality, the Penguins’ stat sheet and overall performance looked really good in a 3-0 win. Here’s the Penguins recap.
San Jose Hockey Now: I disagree, but the hometown boys thought the Teal outplayed the Penguins. Sheng Peng has the flip side for the San Jose Sharks.
Now, let’s break down the game. I felt like Saturday was the first game I was really dialed in on. I could really start to see the system unfold rather than forensically putting it together. There were also some standout performances and a couple of very bad grades. I didn’t give a veteran exemption Saturday, but I sure praised Ben Kindel in the Penguins report card.
PHN+: I’m getting increased reports that more subscribers are seeing their problems fixed, and the pages are looking better! Our folks are working. And I’ve been adding more subscriber content, including yesterday’s locker room story–how are the veterans dealing with the uncomfortable but daily situation in which their jobs are in jeopardy? Go inside the Penguins’ locker room.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: In shades of Alex Nedeljkovic calling out his team, Anthony Stolarz wasted no time this season putting the boots to the boys in a postgame rant that was long on truth and short on couth. Stolarz was bowled a couple of times, and he let the guys know the Globetrotter hockey won’t fly.
Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers are a great team … away from New York. At home, they’re not so good. In the meantime, contract negotiations are ongoing with The Breadman, but things are getting complicated with Artemi Panarin.
Daily Face-Off: Anthony DiMarco has done a nice job in his career, climbing up from rumor rags to legit stuff. He is reporting the Calgary Flames are shopping for a young left-side defenseman, and the Philly Flyers happen to have one they like.
I’d suggest Owen Pickering to Calgary, too. The Flyers are also waffling on what to do with Emil Andrae. Fans in Wilkes-Barre know Andrae too well, but he can’t seem to crack the Flyers’ lineup.
Also from Sportsnet, you can watch Brad Marchand wail on Rasmus Dahlin, then vandalize his helmet.
Have a fun Steelers-less Sunday. I will record the No Pucks Given Podcast tonight when I get home.
So, I’ll put out the call for reader questions/comments on X this evening. You can also leave your NPG questions here in the comments.
