It is encouraging to see the spirited debate on Proposition 50, but I wonder if those who advocate for its passage believe that “defending the rights of California’s voters” actually means “defending the rights of California’s voters to vote Democratic.” While I am disappointed to hear that he will vote for Proposition 50, I believe San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has perfectly stated the backward logic of the underlying premise: “It’s not good governance to allow politicians to pick their constituents.” In an effort to provide alternatives, I suggest that those eager to make more voters Democratic focus on new approaches to governing as opposed to quick fixes to geography.

If Proposition 50 passes, a large number of California Republicans will lose their representation in Congress. It is not President Trump who is a threat to democracy. It is those voting for Proposition 50.
