Bottle & Barlow, a bar in Sacramento’s historic R Street District that also doubled as a barbershop, unexpectedly closed its doors over the weekend. The announcement was made on social media, stating that Saturday night would be the bar’s final day in business. The bar’s social media post on Friday mentioned, “The holiday was happening, vibes were great, and we’re happy to end on a high note. Bottle and Barlow means a lot to a ton of people, and we hope this isn’t goodbye but see ya later!”The news came as a surprise to many, including a business across the street that was unaware of the closure until informed by KCRA 3.”Oh my gosh. That’s crazy. It’s such a Sacramento staple, I didn’t even realize,” said Anastasia Boyd. Russ Chittenden added, “Very sad. This is one of my favorite places.” A third person, William Varner, said, “I’m really surprised that Bottle and Barlow is closed. It’s a neighborhood institution.” Boyd, a bartender at Twisted Track across the street, noted that many employees from Bottle and Barlow would often visit her restaurant. “We always chatted it up right before or after the shift, and they never had any mentions of anything. So it’s quite a bit of a surprise. Bottle and Barlow usually got most of the business,” she said. The future of the location remains uncertain, with some locals hoping for a similar establishment to take its place. “It’d be nice if it were something similar. This had a variety for everybody. Had mocktails, for whiskeys and everything in between. Certainly a very inclusive bar,” Chittenden said.KCRA 3 reached out to Bottle and Barlow for further comment and has yet to hear back as of Sunday night. Off-camera, a staff member said that they were told Friday that Jan. 10 would be the last day.
