EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta will not run for goveror after Gov. Gavin Newsom terms out, according to the LA Times.

Over the weekend, the state’s top prosecutor said his decision was made because he believes that his legal efforts combating the Trump administration are paramount at this time.

“I have a role to play that I think is leading in the nation,” Bonta said. “I want to continue to be the biggest and most powerful check on the abuse of power from this president,” he told the Times.

Bonta’s office has sued the Trump administration more than 50 times.
