FRESNO, Calif. A man was killed and multiple people were injured in a fog-related crash Sunday morning involving as many as 17 vehicles on Highway 99 in Fresno County.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Mike Salas said the collisions occurred at 9:15 a.m. on southbound Highway 99 between North and Cedar avenues. The crash involved numerous vehicles, including a semi-truck.

Salas said the incident began when thick fog reduced visibility to just 10 to 15 feet, prompting two vehicles in the No. 1 and 2 lanes to slow down. As those vehicles reduced their speed, others behind them braked abruptly, leading to a chain-reaction crash as drivers attempted to take evasive action.

Two drivers who had exited their vehicles were struck by other vehicles. One of those individuals was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was found on a nearby grassy area with major injuries.

Approximately 12 ambulances responded, and a FAX bus took multiple victims to the hospital.

“As you can anticipate, we’re going to have this roadway shut down for most of the morning and into the afternoon,” Salas said. “It could extend into the evening.”

Southbound traffic was diverted to North Avenue.

“This is one of the most horrific crashes I can recall,” Salas said.. “About 25 years ago, in nearly the same location, there was a multi-vehicle crash very similar to this. Thankfully, many lives have been saved because of the use of seat belts.”

Salas advised drivers to slow down in inclement weather, especially during foggy conditions.
