Re “New sign of a mayor in denial” (Jan. 11): Your editorial mentioned Todd Gloria’s claim that residents said they wanted better trash services at “hundreds of community meetings.” I attended one of them. It was a farce.

People arrived expecting a public forum. Instead, we were ushered into a conference room filled with tabletop exhibits of flyers and toy bins. Staff were eager to describe how wonderful the new services would be. But they couldn’t answer questions about fees, the main topic of interest. When we expressed specific doubts about the program, they listened politely but took no notes.

We weren’t there to be heard. We were there to be sold. You have to wonder: Does Gloria believe his own fables that he cares what the public wants? Or does he think we’re gullible enough to buy his spin? And how on Earth will San Diego survive three more years of his duplicitous leadership?
