Now entering its final year of construction, an ambitious project to reconfigure the traffic interchange impacting the Vincent Thomas Bridge, 110 Freeway and streets leading in and out of San Pedro has a new traffic pattern for motorists to navigate.

While the new detours may frustrate some motorists — the project is entering its final laps.

The Port of Los Angeles — which is undertaking the $130 million development that’s been ongoing since 2024 and is slated to finish late this year — opened the new northbound on-ramp to the 110 Freeway and the new southbound off-ramp from State Route 47 (Terminal Island) at Front Street and Harbor Boulevard on Monday, Jan. 12.

Along with the new ramps, the port debuted a newly realigned Knoll Drive to access Knoll Hill.

Starting Friday, Jan. 23, and extending through August 31, crews will close both the northbound State Route 47 on-ramp and northbound SR 47 off-ramp at Harbor Boulevard (the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp from the southbound 110).

The interchange — which has taken on growing congestion from both automobiles and large trucks serving the port, causing backups — currently provides access to San Pedro, Wilmington and Terminal Island. It also services the port’s West Basin Container Terminal.

The current phase of work involves continuing on/off-ramp construction north of the Vincent Thomas Bridge with removal of old on/off-ramps.

Retaining wall construction for off-ramp construction south of Vincent Thomas Bridge and building a new on-ramp south of Vincent Thomas Bridge are still ahead.

The entire project is slated to be complete in December.

A port spokesperson said no complications are anticipated on the port’s end as the California State Transportation Department is on track to fully close the Vincent Thomas Bridge around the same time as the interchange project wraps up. Caltrans is now launching into its final early preparations to replace the bridge roadway with a full bridge closure (lasting 16 months) anticipated now to begin in winter 2026-27.

As construction continues, the following detours are in place:

Detour A: Southbound I-110 to Harbor Boulevard. Exit at Channel Street/Pacific Avenue and continue to Front Street/Harbor Blvd.
Detour B: Pacific Avenue to northbound State Route 47. Take Pacific Avenue to Channel Street to SB 110 to northbound SR 47.
Detour C: Harbor Boulevard to northbound SR 47. Take Front Street/Harbor Boulevard to First Street to Gaffey Street to northbound SR 47.

Truckers should follow posted traffic signs and detours accordingly.

Those with questions may leave a message on the public phone line at 310-732-7778. Calls will be returned within 24 hours.
