FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno is one step closer to bringing professional soccer to the Central Valley.
On Tuesday, the city announced it entered into an exclusivity period with the United Soccer League.
During this time, the city and USL will evaluate whether teams can be properly supported, including a suitable stadium, funding models and securing an ownership group.
Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer believes the opportunity will be beneficial for local soccer fans, while also bringing in added entertainment value.
“What I can say is a soccer stadium downtown, larger entertainment district,” he said.
The proposed stadium would have a minimum seating capacity of 5,000 with the ability for future expansion.
Dyer says several possible sites have been toured already, but the city is not prepared to disclose where the stadium will be just yet.
