California State University Fullerton student Michelle King is joining the Tracy A. Wood Fellowship.
The Tracy A. Wood Fellowship was founded by the friends and family of the legendary journalist and Voice of OC Civic Editor to honor Wood’s journalistic legacy by promoting women in journalism.
“Right now, we’re at a really critical point for journalism. It’s being targeted in a lot of ways that we have seen in the past and we also haven’t seen in the past. It’s becoming a pretty treacherous field for a lot of reporters, especially female reporters,” King said.
“We have to keep strong in the face of what is going on and with a lot of criticism coming at us. And newsrooms like this and programs like this are what is keeping the field going strong.”
Born in New Zealand and raised in Texas, King is an honors student at Cal State Fullerton. She currently serves as the associate managing editor of the student-run newspaper, the Daily Titan, and the producer of the Daily Titan podcast. In prior years, she worked as a news editor and assistant copy editor for the paper.
“When you’re an aspiring journalist at the college level, there’s some amount of confidence building that needs to happen in order for you to feel like you can show up in these spaces and report on the news in an effective manner, and I have seen Michelle build that confidence,” said Becca Calvillo, assistant director and lecturer within the University Honors Program.
“Michelle is definitely a role model, because she has such a personable nature.”
During her reporting internship at Voice of OC, King has covered the cities of Fullerton, Fountain Valley and Mission Viejo alongside other coverage, including a story on how Orange County residents can tap into $700 million in unclaimed property through a recently introduced initiative.
