California basketball team gives back to Springfield’s Convoy of Hope before playing in Tournament of Champions

  • January 16, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Players from St. John Bosco High School in California volunteered at Convoy of Hope on Thursday before competing in one of the nation’s highest attended high school basketball tournaments.

The team packed 550 hygiene and meal kits as part of a community service project while in Springfield for the tournament.

“Being able to participate in something that they get to do every day feels very good, and I feel very honored to be a part of this,” said player Dominic Perfetti.

Team rebounds from wildfire devastation

The team is recovering from the Palisades and Eaton fires that devastated the Los Angeles community in January. The fires, worsened by high winds and drought conditions, destroyed more than 12,000 structures and killed 24 people.

The fires are expected to be the costliest wildfires in U.S. history, with losses potentially exceeding $20 billion.

“For us to have an opportunity to learn and give back a little bit ourselves, I actually feel like I’m ready to play a game. It fires me up to be able to be a part of this,” said head coach Matt Dunn.
