(FOX40.COM) — A historic K Street building is expected to undergo a major renovation.

The California State Association of Counties, which advocates on behalf of the state’s 58 counties, announced a $25 million renovation of its historic downtown Sacramento headquarters.

Officials said the constitution includes adding a sixth floor to the building.

According to the organization, the K Street building, which is listed on Sacramento’s historic registry, needs upgrades to meet modern safety, accessibility, and seismic standards. The renovation is aimed at making the building functional for CSAC but will maintain the exterior facade and historic staircase.

COO Chastity Benson said the renovation will create a more open and collaborative space for county leaders from across California. The historic sign and clock will stay, and a vault door left behind years ago will be repurposed.

“This building’s been standing for over 100 years. And we are going to be strengthening the existing structure columns, so that it stands for another 100 years,” Kelly Cowan from S+B James Construction said.

Since being built in 1911, the building has housed PG&E and a local jeweler. The building has been CSAC’s home since 1981.

Construction is set to begin midway through this year and the project is expected to be completed in 2027.
