Re “S.D. pension payment hits record high” (Jan. 10): I am far from an economist. I will not pretend to fully understand how our pension plan obligations will play out, but clearly we can see that this is not sustainable. This city must start trimming the fat off the budget and start laying off high-salaried managers that we do not need. And we must find a legal way to reform our pension system, by whatever means necessary.

The citizens of this city will not stand for more tax increases. Our administration has shown it is incapable of fiscal responsibility. So whatever the bitter pill may come, we as a city must swallow it. The high salaries and the pension plan are choking the life out of this city. That, of course, is second only to the fiscal irresponsibility of our city leaders.
