ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland Men’s Basketball Team is staying to Wisconsin for a Sunday afternoon meeting with Doug Gottlieb and the Green Bay Phoenix on Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. ET.
The Golden Grizzlies (10-9, 6-2 HL) took down the preseason favorites, Milwaukee, in a gritty 73-60, battle in Milwaukee on Thursday.
Fifth-year Michael Houge led the team with 19 points, converting nine of his 15 field goal attempts and adding seven rebounds. Junior Isaac Garrett contributed significantly with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while also providing four assists, as Oakland’s number one point guard, senior Brody Robinson, made an impact from the free-throw line, converting 12 of 14 attempts, and recorded three steals. Fifth-year Tuburu Naivalurua was strong on the boards, collecting 10 rebounds and adding two blocks on defense for the night.
Last week, Garrett was named the Under Armour Horizon League Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Garrett led the Golden Grizzlies to a 2-1 record over the week in Horizon League action, picking up big wins over Youngstown State and defending Horizon League Champion, Robert Morris. The Pleasant Grove, Utah native hit career-highs, scoring 27 points against the Penguins and hit 30 points against the Colonials at home. The 6-8 forward earned his third double-double of the season in Youngstown, along with the 27 points, picking up a season-high 14 rebounds off the glass. He earned his way into the Oakland record book, going 16-for-16 from the line, now the third-most free-throw attempts with 100% accuracy.
Tip-off in Green Bay will be available to stream on ESPN+ with Brian Kuklinski (PxP) and Ryan Wade (Color) on the call. The “Voice of the Golden Grizzlies”, Neal Ruhl, will be on radio on 97.1HD-3/1270am or the Audacy App online.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
The Green Bay Phoenix have grown considerably after head coach Doug Gottlieb’s first season at the helm. After winning only four games last season, the Phoenix are tied with Oakland for second place in the Horizon League, with an 11-8 overall record in 2025-26. Green Bay is last in the Horizon League in scoring offense (74.6ppg), led by junior forward Marcus Hall with 13.8 points/game. The Phoenix’s lone two HL losses occurred at the hands of Robert Morris at home and first-place standing Wright State on the road.
Oakland leads the all-time series at 16-15 overall since 1975. The Golden Grizzlies have won the last three meetings, including the first round of the Horizon League tournament on their home court, 96-72 last March.
