PULLMAN, Wash. (January 17, 2026) – Washington State women’s basketball battled all four quarters Friday night at Beasley Coliseum, but San Francisco was able to pull away late for an 85-72 West Coast Conference win.
The Cougars (4-17, 3-5 WCC) assisted on 19 baskets and forced 18 San Francisco turnovers, showing resilience and competitiveness throughout the night despite being out-rebounded.
Eleonora Villa led Washington State with 18 points, while Alex Covill added 17 points and a presence in the paint.
WSU weathered an early San Francisco shooting surge and stayed within striking distance throughout the opening period. After the Dons built a brief lead behind perimeter shooting, the Cougs responded with improved ball movement and interior touches, closing the first quarter down just 23-19.
Villa and Covill helped stabilize the offense, combining inside scoring with strong passing to keep the Cougars connected. San Francisco gradually created separation in the second quarter by capitalizing on second-chance opportunities, but Washington State continued to generate quality looks. Villa repeatedly attacked the paint, while Malvina Haziri knocked down a key three to trim the deficit. Despite those answers, the Dons carried a 43-35 lead into halftime after scoring late off offensive rebounds.
Washington State showed its most sustained push coming out of the break as Charlotte Abraham sparked the Cougars with a transition three, and Villa followed with consecutive baskets to pull WSU within single digits. The Cougars matched San Francisco possession for possession for much of the third quarter, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and turn them into points, but the Dons answered with timely shots to maintain a narrow 59-54 edge entering the final period.
The fourth quarter opened with Wazzu still firmly in contention. Covill finished through contact inside, and Keandra Koorits added energy plays on both ends as the Cougars continued to fight. San Francisco ultimately gained control down the stretch, converting inside and at the free-throw line to push the margin back to double digits in the final minutes.
