A man was fatally shot while inside a pickup truck in Long Beach early Sunday morning, prompting a homicide investigation, police said.

Officers with the Long Beach Police Department were on patrol around 1:49 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots near the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue, authorities said. As officers searched the area, they located a white pickup truck that had crashed into a light pole and an unoccupied parked vehicle.

Police said officers approached the truck and found an adult male driver suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and a preliminary investigation indicated the victim was inside the vehicle when he was shot, police said. Suspect information and a possible motive were not immediately released and remain under investigation.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
