LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State women’s tennis closed out a successful opening weekend on Sunday, finishing the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational with another strong performance against Denver at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach won on all three days of competition, relying on consistent singles play throughout the weekend. Interim head coach Gertjan De Wilder noted that while the doubles lineup is still a work in progress, the team continued to “compete at a high level in singles,” a trend that carried through Sunday’s action.
Long Beach State picked up one doubles win on the day, as Cecilia Costa and Thea Jagare earned a 6-3 victory at the top spot, before Denver claimed the remaining two matches. In singles play, the Beach responded by taking four of six matches to close the invitational on a high note.
Jagare capped a perfect weekend at the No. 1 position with a 6-4, 6-4 win, remaining unbeaten in singles play. De Wilder pointed to her consistency at the top of the lineup as a major positive, noting that she won all of her matches at No. 1.
Daria Malaescu was equally impressive at No. 4 singles, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win and also finishing the weekend undefeated. De Wilder praised Malaescu’s progress over the course of the weekend. “The level she played at is much higher than what we saw in the fall,” he said. “For her to come out and win her matches comfortably at the No. 4 spot is impressive.”
Additional singles victories came from Costa, who rallied for a three-set win, and Paulina Franco, who closed the day with a straight-set victory at No. 6. The performances underscored the depth of the Beach lineup as the team opened the winter/spring season.
To finish out the tournament, CSUN claimed four singles wins after Fullerton swept the doubles matches.
The Beach Tennis Winter Invitational provided Long Beach State with valuable early-season competition and momentum as the Beach prepare for the start of the spring schedule.
