BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Funeral services have been announced for the late Bakersfield trailblazer Irma Carson.
Carson was born in 1935 and was a founding leader in the advancement of racial and gender justice. She broke barriers as the first Black woman to be employed at City Hall and was the Bakersfield Police Department’s first Black policewoman.
In the 1980s, she served as a member of the Bakersfield City School District for 15 years.
Carson will lie in state Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at Cain Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church on California Avenue.
A community of life tribute will be held that evening at 5:30 p.m.
The next morning, a viewing and service will be held at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church on Brundage Lane.
