Northern California forecast: Foggy start to MLK Jr. Day
Another foggy morning across the Valley with cool temperatures, low visibility, and poor air quality.
FROM MILAN DURING THE GAMES. BACK HERE. NOW WE’RE TAKING A LIVE LOOK HERE OVER THE GOLDEN ONE CENTER. AND BOY, WHAT A FOGGY RIDE INTO WORK TODAY. TAMARA. OH, I KNOW TEO LAKE COMING OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD. COULD BARELY SEE STREETS IN FRONT OF ME. IT WAS JUST REALLY, REALLY DEGRADED VISIBILITY, FOR SURE. HERE’S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE RIGHT NOW FOR YOU IN RANCHO. THIS IS A LIVE CAMERA VIEW FROM HIGHWAY 50 VANTAGE POINT. AND YEAH, YOU COULD JUST SEE THAT IT’S JUST ALL LOW CLOUDS. ALMOST LOOKS LIKE WE’RE SITTING ALMOST IN KIND OF A FOG SOUP FOR THE MOST PART. TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY IN THE LOWER 40S. IN SACRAMENTO AND STOCKTON. IT’S 44. STARTING OUT YOUR MONDAY IN MODESTO AND 18 DEGREES IN TAHOE, WHERE THE SKIES ARE BEAUTIFULLY CLEAR. GREAT MORNING FOR SOME STARGAZING IN THE FOOTHILLS AS WELL AS YOU’RE ABOVE THE FOG INVERSION. A NICE CLEAR MORNING START, NICE AND COOL. BUT THEN YOU GET INTO THE FOG RIGHT HERE IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY. TYPICAL FOG PRONE SPOT WE’VE BEEN SEEING DAY AFTER DAY. AND YOU’VE GOT VISIBILITIES AT A QUARTER OF A MILE OR LESS. AND KEEP IN MIND THAT THE VISIBILITY CHANGES QUITE FREQUENTLY AS WELL. NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE THE FOG AND THE LOW CLOUDS AROUND, BUT WE ALSO HAVE THE PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATION OR THE AIR QUALITY CONCERNS THAT CONTINUE. WE’RE STILL IN THE CATEGORY HERE BETWEEN MODERATE TO UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS. AND THAT’S ALSO JUST KIND OF PILING RIGHT UP INTO THE CENTRAL VALLEY AND DELTA COMMUNITIES AS WELL. NOTICE HOW THERE’S NOT MUCH MOVEMENT IN TERMS OF THE WIND. SO WE HAVE WINDS RIGHT NOW THAT ARE PRETTY LIGHT COMING ACROSS SACRAMENTO PRIMARILY OUT OF THE EAST HERE AT ABOUT THREE MILES PER HOUR. AND YOU HAVE JUST A VERY FAINT SOUTH FLOW THAT’S GOING IN THROUGH STOCKTON AND MODESTO. SO THE WINDS ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO STAY LIGHT. WE’RE NOT GOING TO SEE TOO MUCH OF A PATTERN CHANGE UP GOING INTO REALLY THE MIDDLE PART OF THIS WEEK. BIG DOME OF HIGH PRESSURE. STILL THE MAIN INFLUENCE ARE JUST KIND OF STICKS AROUND. BUT BY WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY, A LITTLE GAME CHANGER JUST APPEARS HERE OFF THE COAST. AND THAT WILL BRING US A FEW MORE CLOUDS AS WE GET INTO THURSDAY. JUST NOT EXPECTING ANY RAIN OR SNOW FROM THESE CLOUDS. AND THEN AS WE PUSH AHEAD TO THE WEEKEND, THAT SYSTEM MOVES INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND IT MAY BRING SOME BENEFICIAL RAIN INTO THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE STATE. HIGH PRESSURE BEGINS TO BUILD BACK IN FOR NEXT WEEKEND, AND AS A RESULT, IT DOES LOOK LIKE WE WILL BE SEEING A PRETTY DRY FORECAST AS WE LOOK AHEAD EVEN INTO NEXT WEEKEND. SO THIS DRY PATTERN JUST NOT BREAKING ITS STRIDE. TEO. SO WE’RE LOOKING AT REALLY A STRETCH HERE OF WEATHER WHERE THOSE MORNINGS ARE QUITE COOL AND FOGGY. AIR QUALITY IS STILL GOING TO BE A CAUSE FOR CONCERN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. AND THEN AS YOU LOOK AT THOSE TEMPERATURES OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS, THOSE AFTERNOONS KIND OF HOP AROUND UPPER 50S TO LOWER 60S, WHICH IS A BIT ABOVE NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. BUT I DON’T THINK THERE’S MUCH COMPLAINTS. I THINK ONCE THE FOG BREAKS DOES TURN OUT TO BE A NICE DAY. YEAH, IT CERTAINLY

Dense, widespread fog is present in the Valley again Monday morning and is expected to last through noon with visibility reduced to a quarter of a mile or less at times. That means foggy and cool conditions for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day marches and events across the Valley. Once the fog lifts, the Valley can expected mostly sunny skies for the rest of the afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s.Air quality continues to be at “unhealthy” levels in the Valley, especially for sensitive groups like those with COPD and asthma. Limit outdoor exercise today. With the exception of Truckee, where freezing fog is present early this Monday morning, mostly sunny skies are expected throughout the day for the Foothills and Sierra. Clouds increase a bit more by the middle of this week, but there is no rain in the seven-day forecast.
