Re “‘I don’t think this is the right thing to do’: Bid for new consumer-protection unit prompts turf war with DA” (Jan. 12): The proposal by San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer to create a new county consumer protection unit is a bureaucratic duplication at best. We are fortunate to already have a competent district attorney who has a unit that handles that subject just fine. Lawson-Remer’s proposal simply creates a duplicate county unit competing for county funds with the hope of generating income from fines. The last thing we need is spending money on another unit that is overseen by politicians competing with professional prosecutors.
