There was never a doubt when No. 8 NC State wrestling took the mat against CSU Bakersfield about who would win.
The Wolfpack (11-3) dominated in the 43-3 victory, winning nine out of 10 bouts against the Roadrunners (1-10). The win concluded NC State’s road trip on the West Coast, where the Pack also defeated Stanford.
Of the Pack’s nine winning bouts, eight came with bonus points. The Wolfpack earned a pair of pins, four tech falls and two major decisions. NC State’s only decision came in the 157-pound bout when freshman Jason Kwaak won 8-4.
After coming up clutch against Stanford, No. 2 sixth year Isaac Trumble remained unstoppable in the heavyweight matchup, pinning his opponent for the fourth time this year. Sixth year Don Cates also earned a pin in the 184-pound bout.
Both No. 12 sixth year Ryan Jack and No. 5 redshirt sophomore Koy Buesgens won via tech fall in the 141 and 149-pound bouts, respectively. The duo is quickly becoming one of NC State’s strongest spots in the lineup, regularly stacking up bonus points.
The tech falls continued to roll in with the 165 and 197-pound bouts. No. 16 freshman Will Denny cruised to a 20-4 tech fall first, before No. 27 redshirt sophomore Patrick Brophy picked up an 18-2 win. Both wrestlers are emerging as key pieces for the future of the program.
Sixth year Zach Redding earned NC State’s first victory of the day with a major decision in the 133-pound matchup. Taking a 14-6 win, the response was a strong bounce back from Redding after Friday’s loss by decision. No. 5 redshirt junior Matt Singleton also won by major decision in the 174-pound bout, posting a 12-2 victory.
The Wolfpack’s lone loss came in the 125-pound bout, the very first matchup of the day. No. 1 redshirt sophomore Vince Robinson did not take the mat, with redshirt freshman Brad Yokum starting instead. Yokum suffered a 6-3 defeat to Richard Castro-Sandoval.
With the win over the Roadrunners in the books, NC State’s focus returns to ACC competition. The Pack’s next four dual meets will be against ACC competition before closing the regular season with a non-conference matchup hosting No. 20 Cornell.
Next up, NC State returns home to Reynolds Coliseum to host No. 13 North Carolina. The Wolfpack currently holds a 12-match winning streak over the Tar Heels — by far the longest streak by either side in the rivalry series.
