BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — California senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla are set to visit an ICE detention facility in California City for an oversight visit on Tuesday.

The visit comes amid an escalation of federal immigration enforcement across California and in Minnesota by the Trump administration. Operations by federal agents have been met by protesters following the shooting death of protester Renee Good in Minnesota.

Schiff and Padilla said in a release their visit is to “learn firsthand of the concerns concerns surrounding the condition of detained individuals” at the ICE detention facility in California City.

The California City ICE detention facility is the largest immigration detention center in the state. It was formerly a California state prison — California City Correctional Facility — but was closed in 2024 after CoreCivic and the state did not renew a contract to keep in open.

More then 70,000 people are in ICE custody — more than any other point in U.S. history — Padilla and Schiff said in a release.

Schiff and Padilla said their visit is intended to highlight alleged inhumane conditions inside the California City Detention Facility. Last month, California Attorney General sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security over concerns about the conditions at the facility.

Bonta said the facility lacked in providing appropriate medical care for detainees, did not provide appropriate clothing or blankets to keep warm, had incomplete records, and had unsanitary living conditions.

Seven detainees filed a lawsuit in November against the Trump administration over the conditions at the California City facility.
