The California Highway Patrol’s Alturas Area Office recently concluded a successful 90-day enforcement campaign along U.S. Highway 395, spanning from the Oregon border to the Nevada line. Partnering with CHP offices in Susanville and Quincy, the initiative targeted key factors contributing to collisions, including speeding, unsafe passing, impaired driving, and commercial vehicle violations.
Key outcomes from the campaign include:
A 109% increase in DUI arrests compared to the previous three-year average for the same period.A 22% reduction in overall traffic collisions in the Alturas Area.
Beyond enforcement, CHP officers engaged in traffic safety education via social media, in-person outreach, and traditional media channels.
CHP Commander Danny Koetsier emphasizes the importance of safe driving habits:
Leave early to avoid rushing.Be patient when passing.Avoid distractions while driving.Always wear seat belts and properly restrain children.Never drive under the influence; designate a sober driver.Maintain safe following distances and obey speed limits.
Motorists are encouraged to report reckless or suspected DUI drivers by calling 9-1-1, which connects directly to CHP dispatch centers available 24/7.
The California Highway Patrol remains committed to enhancing public safety through dedicated enforcement and education efforts.
