SO DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY? WHETHER IT’S A WILDFIRE, FLOODING OR A NATURAL DISASTER, STUDIES SHOW AROUND HALF OF AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS SAY THEY HAVE SUPPLIES READY TO GO. FAR FEWER ACTUALLY HAVE A PLAN TO PUT THAT TO USE. JOINING ME NOW TO TALK ABOUT EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS FAIR THAT’S COMING UP. IT’S TAKING PLACE THIS WEEKEND. I MEAN, OTHER THAN THE OBVIOUS, THERE ARE THAT MANY PEOPLE THAT MAY NOT HAVE AN ACTION PLAN. THAT’S TRUE. YES. SO THIS IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT THAT BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO LEARN ABOUT EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS, ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS THROUGH HANDS ON ACTIVITY AND EXHIBITS. IT WILL BE HELD AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER AT 601 ALHAMBRA BOULEVARD. WHY IS THE LIONS CLUB SO, LIKE INTO THIS TYPE OF THING? WELL, THE LIONS CLUB IS VERY INSTRUMENTAL WORLDWIDE WITH DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. AND WE ARE FIRST ON THE SCENE IN MANY DISASTER SCENES. WE IN ANY EARTHQUAKE AND ANY FLOOD, WE ARE FIRST ON SCENE TO HELP WITH WITH YOUR SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THE RED CROSS OFTENTIMES AREN’T YOU. SO YOU GUYS HAVE SEEN SOME THINGS YOURSELVES. HAVE YOU SEEN PEOPLE THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN? I MEAN, LITTLE BETTER HAD THEY PREPARED MORE? YES. YOU HAVE SEEN THAT FIRSTHAND. OKAY, GOOD. WHAT TYPE OF THINGS CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE ATTENDING THIS FAIR? SO WE HAVE PG&E IS GOING TO BE THERE TO TALK ABOUT HOW TO TURN OFF YOUR GAS IN AN EMERGENCY. WE HAVE AMERICAN RED CROSS THAT ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY. WE HAVE MANTIS GARDENS THAT’S GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW TO DESIGN YOUR GARDEN FOR DROUGHT. WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE SACRAMENTO AREA SEWER. THAT’S GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW TO KEEP YOUR SEWER FLOWING SO YOU DON’T HAVE BACKUPS FOR FLOOD. AND WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT WE HAVE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA LIONS SIDE ASSOCIATION THAT’S GOING TO DO FREE VISION SCREENING FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS, WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT. A LOT OF PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE CUT OFFS, CUT OFFS WITH THE FEDERAL GRANTS, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR ABILITY TO HAVE THAT DONE. SO WE’RE GOING TO HAVE FREE VISION SCREENINGS AS WELL. YES, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE SACRAMENTO PD. IT’S GOING TO DO ACTIVE SHOOTER SEMINAR AND THEY’RE GOING TO DO A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION ON HOW TO SURVIVE AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION. I MEAN, THESE ARE REALLY SCENARIOS WHERE YOU’RE CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT. A LOT OF PEOPLE PANIC KIND OF NATURAL REACTION THERE. AND YOU WOULDN’T KNOW WHERE TO TURN YOUR GAS OFF OR, YOU KNOW, GOD FORBID THERE WAS AN ACTIVE SHOOTER. WHAT DO YOU DO? DO YOU STAND UP AGAINST THEM? DO YOU HIDE? YOU KNOW, THAT KIND OF THING. AND YOUR FOLKS ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY LEARN REAL WORLD TECHNIQUES TO GET THROUGH THESE THINGS, CORRECT? ALL RIGHT. The Sacramento Area Lions Club is hosting an Emergency Preparedness & Environmental Awareness Fair on Saturday, Jan. 24, in coordination with Sacramento City Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum.The organization says recent weather events, wildfire seasons, power outages and other emergencies have shown how important it is for residents to be informed and prepared before a crisis occurs. This fair will allow the public to ask questions, attend safety briefings, see demonstrations, and connect face-to-face with the agencies and organizations that serve the community during critical situations.Several local public safety agencies, nonprofit organizations, and service groups are attending to help residents better prepare for emergencies and understand environmental risks that impact our region. Those organizations, including the American Red Cross, LISTOS California, PG&E, Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services, Amateur Radio Emergency Services will give attendees preparedness guidance.The Sacramento Police Department will also be at the fair to offer a seminar focused on active shooter awareness and personal safety preparedness.The fair starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m. at Sacramento’s Clunie Community Center, located at 601 Alhambra Boulevard.Learn more in the video above.
