SAN JOSE, Calif. – A sworn member of the San Jose Police Department was shot Wednesday afternoon after officers responded to reports of an armed carjacking.

The officer, whose condition is unknown, was transported to a local hospital.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office stated that deputies were asked to aid California Highway Patrol Officers engaged in a pursuit. The incident began with a carjacking in San Jose and stretched into San Benito County before returning to San Jose. The suspect in the incident exchanged gunfire with officers in Hollister.

The chase ended on Julian Street, near the intersection with Terraine Street, just off Highway 87. Traffic on the highway has been closed due to police activity. Commuters should expect delays and plan to use alternate routes.
