HERCULES — The California Highway Patrol shut down the westbound direction of Interstate 80 early Thursday after police flooded the area looking for a person.

The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic about 7:30 a.m. and announced that it had shut down the far three left lanes on I-80 on the freeway before the Richmond Parkway exit. They later said that they had closed all the lanes and were diverting traffic to the Willow Avenue exit in Hercules.

The nature of the incident was not known immediately but authorities described it as “major police activity.” The CHP said they would release more information later Thursday.

Helicopters were circling the area overhead and motorists coming from Vallejo were urged not to use the Carquinez Bridge and instead take Interstate 780 to Interstate 680 and cross the Benicia Bridge.

The CHP did not have an estimate for how long the freeway would be closed.
