SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — BART was recovering mid-Monday morning after a three-hour disruption that caused significant delays systemwide in the Transbay Tube and suspended two train lines.

At about 6:15 a.m., BART alerted riders of delays, and service on Red and Green lines was interrupted due to an equipment problem on the track in the Transbay Tube.

BART spokesperson Chris Filippi told ABC7 News that a train was going through the Transbay Tube before 6 a.m. when the train operator heard a loud pop. That train was able to get out of the tube.

“What we did at that point is we sent an out of service train in to inspect the tube,” Filippi said. “When that train went in, that train operator reported seeing smoke. So once the train operator saw smoke, then at that point, we stopped offering service on that track.”

Trains were single-tracking through the tube until about 9:30 a.m., when officials said the transit agency was recovering from the disruption and regular service was running.

That caused a lot of confusion for travelers at Embarcadero Station Monday morning, which is the last stop before the Transbay Tube.

A spokesperson for BART says the transit agency can’t promise there won’t be another systemwide outage in the future.

Many of these travelers have already dealt with some of the major issues BART has seen in the last few months.

Filippi said the agency owns up to the fact that it has been a rough commute for riders.

This is the fifth major BART disruption this year, starting with a system wide outage in May.

BART couldn’t give me any more details about the equipment issue that caused the disruption but they did say that they’d be working to see if there are similarities to the ones that have happened recently.

While service is back and running, a BART spokesperson said there are still major delays. Service wasn’t restored in time though for most people’s Monday morning work commute.
